Consider this bit of idiocy from Roger Simon, founder of Pajamas Media, and a novelist and screenwriter in his actual day job: January 7th, 2009 4:27 pm Joe the Plumber: Mr. Smith Goes to Jerusalem for Pajamas TV By now many of you have heard that Joe "the Plumber" Wurzelbacher is leaving for Israel tomorrow to be a war correspondent for Pajamas TV. This has created quite a brouhaha in the media - cable television, newspapers, wire services, etc. Everyone from CNN to gawker.com has something to say about Joe heading for the Middle East. He will appear on Fox and Friends tomorrow morning before his departure. To be honest, some (maybe much) of this reportage is pretty snotty. Nora O'Donnell of MSNBC - herself a MA in international relations, lahdeedah - fairly frothed at the mouth at the prospect of the unqualified Joe having the temerity to report news in a foreign land. Those hipoisie over at Gawker weren't too charitable either. Evidently, a lot of people are annoyed that Joe's fifteen Warhol minutes aren't quite over yet. Or perhaps they're threatened that a common man can be a reporter simply by asking common sense questions - no Columbia J-school degree required. (Hemingway didn't have one. He didn't even go to college, as I recall.) But the larger question is the role of expertise in general. Of course, experts are valuable, but so are those who ask the seemingly too obvious questions of the supposedly uninformed - dumb questions that can end up having more value for the public than all the experts combined. Sometimes, anyway"¦. Now, consider what Simon posits as a serious argument in favor of Joe-s journalistic credentials: Hemingway didn-t have a college degree. Joe the War Correspondent doesn-t have a college degree. Therefore: Joe the War Correspondent = Hemingway. I-m not being "cute" here: this is the actual dumbass argument offered. So, let-s look at Hemingway-s writing education, just to make sure that he-s as clueless and inexperienced as Joe the Plumb-bob. From my old editor at The Kansas City Star, Steve Paul: Ernest Miller Hemingway was 18 years old when he walked into the newsroom of The Kansas City Star and began his writing career. Straight out of high school in Oak Park, Ill., Hemingway pounded the streets as a cub reporter at the newspaper for six and a half months, from Oct. 17, 1917 to April 30, 1918. From here, with World War I in progress, he joined the Red Cross ambulance service, headed for the front in Italy, was seriously wounded, fell in and out of love and willed himself into becoming a literary giant"¦. Hemingway was "apprenticed" as a cub reporter, which is how newspapers used to train journalists. The question is one of "profession" and "professionalism": The scholars would ask for the [Kansas City Star] library-s clippings on Hemingway and C.G. "Pete" Wellington, the assistant city editor of The Star in 1917. Hemingway credited Wellington with changing his verbose high school writing style into clear, provocative English. The scholars also requested "The Star Copy Style" sheet, a single, galley-sized page, which contained the 110 rules governing Star prose. Hemingway later would recall the sheet as something "they gave you to study when you went to work and after that you were just as responsible for having learned it as after you-ve had the articles of war read to you." Hemingway would always remember the style sheet and its core admonition: "Use short sentences. Use short first paragraphs. Use vigorous English. Be positive, not negative." "Those were the best rules I ever learned for the business of writing," Hemingway said in 1940. "I-ve never forgotten them. No man with any talent, who feels and writes truly about the thing he is trying to say, can fail to write well if he abides with them." The "Copy Style" sheet was a bible, containing eminently practical rules. I commend to you the "Copy Style" sheet excerpt on the site, too. But my point is this: Hemingway was trained in a tough trade by seasoned veterans. He was shown how to write, and apprenticed in his profession. Try to preserve the atmosphere of the speech in your quotation. For instance, in quoting a child, do not let him say "Inadvertently, I picked up the stone and threw it." [Style Sheet] Hemingway was "one of those who make great demands on themselves," to quote Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset, who neatly summarized Simon-s argument and its absurdity very precisely in 1930: When one speaks of "select minorities" [i.e. "the media elite"] it is usual for the evil-minded to twist the sense of this expression, pretending to be unaware that the select man is not the petulant person who thinks himself superior to the rest, but the man who demands more of himself than the rest, even though he may not fulfil in his person those higher exigencies. For there is no doubt that the most radical division that it is possible to make of humanity is that which splits it into two classes of creatures: those who make great demands on themselves, piling up difficulties and duties; and those who demand nothing special of themselves, but for whom to live is to be every moment what they already are, without imposing on themselves any effort towards perfection; mere buoys that float on the waves. This reminds me that orthodox Buddhism is composed of two distinct religions: one, more rigorous and difficult, the other easier and more trivial: the Mahayana- "great vehicle" or "great path"- and the Hinayana- "lesser vehicle" or "lesser path." The decisive matter is whether we attach our life to one or the other vehicle, to a maximum or a minimum of demands upon ourselves. The division of society into masses and select minorities is, then, not a division into social classes, but into classes of men, and cannot coincide with the hierarchic separation of "upper" and "lower" classes. [Revolt of the Masses, 1930] Hemingway clearly fell into one class. Joe the Plumber falls into well, an obvious class, as well. This is the absurdist concept that education, training, experience "” "competence""“ don-t matter. It is more than a dumbass putdown of journalism "” which, while it may have its faults, and too-frequent gaffes is far preferable to the howling chaos that would exist without it "” but is, in fact, the conscious and deceptive use of what I can only term a very evil and malevolent lie: that anyone can do any job, you know, like president, or war correspondent. See? Joe the Plumber is going to show up them fancy pants journalistic city slickers. Yee haw. Except that Simon isn-t a stupid man. Misguided? Perhaps, but not a moron, prima fascie. Novel writing and screenwriting require more than a little sheer skill in the difficult discipline of writing. But Simon is suggesting here "” by his own logick "” that Joe the Novelist and Joe the Screenwriter would be at least as good as Simon himself on Joe-s first shot out of the box. It-s worse than absurd or ridiculous "” it is a conscious, intentional lie. What kind of person pushes the meme that any dumbass can do any job? This isn-t a news story. It-s an episode of South Park. Here-s the regard that Simon holds for those in that profession Hemingway apprentice And remember Simon-s bray: Evidently, a lot of people are annoyed that Joe's fifteen Warhol minutes aren't quite over yet. Chicago, IL.  --  A 4-year-old boy, reportedly a foster child, was mauled to death by a Rottweiler Sunday afternoon in his foster family-s Southwest Side backyard. The boy was found dead in his backyard at 3819 W. 61st St. at 3:18 p.m. after being mauled by a Rottweiler, according to Fire Media Affairs Asst. Director Eve Rodriguez. Alex Angulo, of the 61st Street address, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:14 p.m., according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Police responding to the scene found more than one dog at the home although only one is believed to have attacked the boy, police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti said. Angulo was reportedly attacked by his foster uncle-s dog, according to a source. The grisly attack left the boy without part of his leg.   The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating Alex's death, according to spokesman Jimmie Whitelow, who said DCFS has not had prior contact with the family. Whitelow was not able to comment Sunday night whether there were any other children in the home at the time of the attack.   Wentworth Area detectives were probing the attack Sunday night, but would not confirm whether charges would be filed. An autopsy for Angulo is slated for Monday.

What does the perfect homeschool family look like? We all have a picture in our minds of what this family probably looks like so I am sure we will recognize them on sight whenever we come across them. Their above-average children are always super neat, camera-ready clean, impeccably behaved, and ready to smilingly recite thirty-seven phonics rules-or name all the signers of the U.S. Constitution (and their wives!)-at the drop of a textbook. Their orderly house is so picture perfect, it will probably be featured in the next issue of Better Houses and Homesteads and-at least in my mental picture-their refrigerator is always clean! However, after many years of publishing the Home School Digest, we-ve yet to find this elusive family to grace one of our covers. No, we couldn-t even find this family by looking under our own roof! At the opposite end of the spectrum are those who hopelessly throw up their hands claiming, "Nobody-s perfect!" and never even try to reach loftier, nobler goals. I am always amazed when parents say to me, "You could not possibly understand what it-s like to live with a hyperactive child (or a rebellious teenager, or...)-your children are perfect!" Really? Despite repeated attempts to dispel the myths to the contrary, I often find myself trying to assure other parents that my children (and I!) do live on this side of the Pearly Gates and we know what it-s like to war against the world, the flesh, and the devil. But, for vast numbers of parents, there always seems to be this inevitably frustrating tendency of trying to keep up with the homeschooling Joneses-and, this is where the problems begin. When we look to the world, or our peers or contemporaries, for our standard of measure, we are setting ourselves up for failure. "For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise" (2 Corinthians 10:12). When desiring to see how we are measuring up as a family, we should carefully examine ourselves in the only mirror of truth that accurately reflects an untainted, and unpainted, reality. It is God-s Word that provides the ultimate and unchanging standard of measure for serious-minded homeschoolers. Measuring ourselves by "what we used to be" is limited in its effectiveness to enable us to reach perfection. Looking back can tell us how far we-ve come, but only by setting our sights on the Highest Standard, will we know how far we-ve yet to go. "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you" (Philippians 3:13-15). To reach the perfection that our God intends for us, we must unlearn some habits and attitudes that we-ve picked up along the way. Those of us who have struggled with a painful past will have to forgive, try to forget, and turn away from those things which only weigh us down and hold us back from ultimate success. "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith; Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds" (Hebrews 12:1-3). It is wearying to measure yourself against anyone but the LORD, or anything but the Word of our God. It is only His Word that perfects us through the power of His Holy Spirit. "But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works" (2 Timothy 3:14-17). If we had nothing but the Word of our God to teach us, to train us, to guide us, to equip us-it would be enough. I realize this is not a popular opinion. Those who would believe God-s Word on this matter will not be popular people. In fact, they may actually be persecuted for such beliefs, but if they bear it patiently, even that will make them perfect in God-s eyes! "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing" (James 1:2-4). Relax! Cease striving. Put away the worldly instruments and standards of measure. Who cares what the relatives are saying? So what if everyone else-s teenager is taking (or passed, or failed) the SAT (or any other government standard of measure)? What does it matter if your friend-s five-year-old reads at a 7th-grade level and your 9th-grader still has to stop and sound out words? Just because everyone in the homeschool support group is going to the beach and calling it a "field trip," does that mean your family has to participate? If the government school kids plan a "see-you-at-the-pole" day, do our homeschooled young people really need to mimic the event to prove their spirituality? If you can live up to the standards of the most admired homeschool family you know, will you, then, really be perfect? It all boils down to this: Who are you trying to please? Whose standards are you striving to attain? As long as you forsake the vain philosophies of this world, base your foundations on the Word of God, and seek to please Him-and Him only-then, in His eyes, you will be the perfect homeschool family! Obama Family Tours Washington

Louise Radnofsky reports on the transition. President-elect Barack Obama and his wife Michelle took their daughters to the Lincoln Memorial Saturday night on the family-s first full weekend together in Washington ahead of the inauguration. The Obamas held the girls- hands as they ascended the steps of the monument, flanked by security staff. Behind the columns at the front of the memorial, the president-elect appeared to pause briefly in front of the white marble statue of a seated Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Obama referenced President Lincoln throughout his own presidential campaign, which he began outside the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois where Mr. Lincoln began his political career. The family spent about ten minutes inside, in an area which includes inscriptions of the Gettysburg address and President Lincoln-s second inaugural address as well as murals depicting the freeing of slaves and representations of justice, unity and charity. They then walked down the steps, where civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963, facing the Mall-s reflecting pool, the Washington monument and Capitol Hill. They passed a scaffold which has been erected for a platform, and went into the monument-s underground exhibit. They emerged from there together after another ten minutes, with the younger of the two daughters, Sasha, stepping up onto a low wall and pacing carefully along it. The memorial did not seem to have been closed to the public, and other visitors with young children came out of it shortly after the Obamas.

Birthday gal Vidya Balan celebrated her special day with family and friends. She had organized a small party at Panchgani’s Ravine Resort. Besides her mother, aunt and sister, other family members had especially flown down from Delhi to ring her birthday. “Panchgani is Vidya’s favorite place. Like Aamir who owns a big house in Panchgani, Vidya too wants to buy a weekend home there. She was glad that she got to celebrate her birthday in Panchgani,†said a friend of Vidya’s. The Most Remarkable Porcelain in Italy

The Italians attempted many times to imitate the Chinese porcelain but resulting in only white glass. The first factory in Italy was started in 1720 by Francesco Vezzi, which made hard-paste porcelain varying in colour from white. Some of the rulers patronage the making of the porcelain wares. Italy  Florence During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries much experimental work was carried on in attempts to imitate Chinese porcelain, which had been brought to Europe by then. Documents record that some of the Venetian glassmakers were making trials, but it is believed that they resulted in only a white glass. By 1575 a method of making soft-paste porcelain had been found in Florence, under the patronage of Francesco Maria de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and this is known in consequence as 'Medici Porcelain'. Of the pieces made between the years 1575 and 1587, when the works apparently closed, it has been calculated that fifty-nine survive. Of these, forty-one are now in museums, four are in private possession and fourteen have disappeared over the years. A plate that had been lost, was rediscovered and sold in London in 1949 for £1,100. Almost all the surviving located Medici porcelain is painted in under glaze blue, and occasionally with additional outlining in dark purple. The mark is usually a large-scale drawing in blue of the dome of Sta. Their venture began in 1758, but lasted for only five years. The most successful Venice factory was that directed by Geminiano Cozzi, a banker, who opened it in 1764. At Le Nove, near Bassano, about twenty-five miles northwest of Venice a factory was opened in 1752 by Pasquale Antonibon, who already made majolica there. The wares produced were of all kinds and the paste resembled closely that of Cozzi's factory; grey in colour 'with a wet-looking glaze that develops a brownish tone where it lies thick'. The cities of Florence and Venice were some of the important places where the porcelain making were learned to have taken place with may discoveries of the wares in different parts of this cities. Carving was the earliest ways of decorating the woods. This carving was done almost in all types of woods. It gave a new looks and a generated a new interest for furniture. And then you have inlay type of decoration, an alternative of carving. This took many different forms over the years, varying from simple straight lines in wood of contrasting colour to the ground (called 'stringing'), to the elaboration of marquetry in which the inlay often covers a greater proportion of the surface than the ground.
